Cardinals Soar to 64-61 Victory Over Drew
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University of America's women's basketball, backed by a season high 17 steals, used a suffocating team defense to come away with a 64-61 victory over Drew University. The Cardinals, now 12-8, improve to 5-4 in the Landmark Conference.
Brianna Peterson (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) led CUA with 25 points and four steals in the win. Sophomore guard Kerri Confrey (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) recorded a commendable 11 points, five steals, and four assists, while teammate Jenn Canale (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) led the team with 8 rebounds.
From the opening minutes of the game, the Cardinals found themselves fighting a gritty battle with the Rangers. CUA jumped out to an early 8-1 lead, thanks to the hot shooting of Peterson, Confrey, and Kelly Burke (Glendora, N.J./Bishop Eustace). A three point play by Confrey gave the Cardinals an 11 point lead, but Drew was able to cut it to 7 by the time both teams headed to the locker room.
In the second half, the Rangers fought their way back into the game, finally snatching a 46-44 lead off of a three-pointer by Jessica Del Vecchio. Each team then traded back and forth buckets as the lead changed hands eight times in the final six minutes. Finally, a jumper and two foul shots by Peterson put the Cardinals ahead for good with 18 seconds left as the Red and Black came away with a 64-61 victory.
CUA returns to the court on Saturday, February 7th for a home contest against Juniata. Game time is set for 5:20 p.m.
