Women's Basketball Falls Short, 61-47

WASHINGTON-- CUA, led by Brianna Peterson (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) who had 22 points tonight, fell to Juniata, 61-47.
Claire Petersen (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh High School), playing her first game as a Cardinal, shot 2-3 from the field and was a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. Both of C. Petersen's field goals were triples. B. Peterson also had five rebounds to lead the team.
The Eagles, led by Kelly Ashcraft's 15 points, had three players in double figures.
After an early layup by Kerri Confrey (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) was matched by Claudia McDowell the visitors went on a 13-2 run and never looked back. The Eagles led by as many as 17 with only five minutes remaining in the first half before the Cardinals battled back cutting the lead to five just before the break.
In the second half, Juniata extended its lead once again, but the Cardinals stayed in the game, cutting the lead to as few as six with 15:41 remaining on the clock. The Juniata offense, which shot nearly 40% from the field, maintained and extended its lead throughout the second half.
CUA was out rebounded 45-29, but held the turnover margin at zero and grabbed 10 steals for the game. The Cardinals won the battle of the benches, netting 16 points off the bench.
CUA returns to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. as the Cardinals will welcome Susquehanna to the DuFour Center.
