Women's Basketball Falls to Susquehanna, 63-60
February 8, 2009
WASHINGTON-- With three players in double figures, including Brianna Peterson (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) who led the team with 16 points, the CUA women's basketball team fell to Susquehanna, 63-60.
Kerri Confrey (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) finished with 14 points and six assists for the Cardinals while Jessica Schiavoni (Winchester, Va./John Handley) marked 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench for CUA.
Rachael Hughes led the way for the Crusaders scoring 16 points and marking four helpers. Susquehanna had four players in double figures.
After taking an early four-point lead, CUA saw their early momentum shift away, and with 14:56 left in the first half Susquehanna took a one-point lead. The visitors would extend that lead to as many as 12 in the first half, but the relentless Cardinals cut that lead to five at the break.
Using the momentum they gained in the first half, Peterson and Lauren McPeak (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) took the game inside and tied the game at 32 with 17:14 remaining in the contest.
The Crusaders again took a small lead, but the Cardinals would not let the game slip away knotting the game again with 13:01 showing on the clock. Over the next several minutes Susquehanna took a third small lead, as many as six points, over the Cardinals, but CUA battled back.
The Cardinals again tied the game, this time with only 1:27 remaining, 58-58.
Down the stretch the Crusaders shot five of eight from the charity stripe, while CUA only took two trips to the line, where Schiavoni made both.
CUA shot 35% from the field and grabbed 16 second chance points from its 12 offensive boards, but fell just short as Peterson's triple attempt as time was about to expire hit the rim. Schiavoni grabbed the rebound but did not have enough time left on the clock to get the ball beyond the arc and take a second attempt to tie the game.
CUA will return to action on Saturday, February 14, as the Cardinals will travel to Scranton for the first game of a women's and men's doubleheader on the road. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
