Brianna Peterson's Double Double Helps CUA to 65-53 Win
WASHINGTON-- Brianna Peterson dropped 25 points and added 11 boards to help CUA (11-3, 4-0 LC) en route to a 65-53 win over USMMA (4-7, 0-4 LC) on Saturday evening in Landmark Conference action.
Jill Woerner added 13 points for the Cardinals while Kate Robinson added 11 boards, five assists and five steals.
Rebecca Grimes led the way for the Mariners with 14 points while Kiersten Healy and Janay Weather combined for 23 rebounds, 11 and 12 respectively.
The Cards broke out of the gate early with a 5-0 run, but the visitors evened the game less than four minutes into the contest. CUA answered immediately with a 12-1 run over the next six minutes, to lead by 11 halfway through the first stanza.
The Cardinals extended the lead to as many as 16 with 4:50 remaining in the first half before settling on an eight-point advantage, 37-29, at the break.
In the second half, CUA extended its lead early and was ahead by as many as 12, but 8:33 remaining the Mariners cut the hosts lead to two as Rebecca Grimes hit a triple. The teams then exchanged baskets before Peterson grabbed and offensive rebound and sparked a 14-4 run down the stretch to seal the victory.
The Cardinals will return to the hardwood at 2 p.m. tomorrow as the Drew University Rangers will travel to the DuFour Center for more Landmark Conference action.
