Women's Basketball Falls to Wesley, 71-56
WASHINGTON-- Led by Brianna Peterson with 25 points, the CUA women's basketball team (0-1) fell to Wesley College, 71-56 on Sunday at the DuFour Center.
Peterson had seven rebound in the contest but the Cardinals were out rebounded 51-40 in the game. Jill Woerner and Katarina Owunna began their collegiate careers with with solid contributions. Woerner finished with six points and five rebounds while Owunna had eight tallies and five boards.
Cory Boyd led the way for Wesley with 26 points while Angie Owens had a double double with 16 points and 19 rebounds.
CUA led for much of the first half and took a solid seven point lead into the break.
The visitors went on an early 22-5 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half taking a 34-33 lead with 14:40 to go on a triple by Michele Mules. Wesley then kept the pressure on with solid defense and outstanding rebounding.
CUA had 11 offensive rebounds in the game, but managed only four second-chance points. The Cardinals shot 35.3% from the field for the game, making five triples, while the visitors shot 40% from three point range, dropping 10 treys in the contest.
CUA returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 17 as the Cardinals will welcome St. Mary's (Md.) to the DuFour Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
