Katarina Owunna Leads Women's Basketball to 74-71 Win
over St. Mary's (Md.)
WASHINGTON-- Katarina Owunna led CUA (1-1) with 17 boards and 13 points for her first career double double as the Cardinals bounced the Seahawks of St. Mary's College of Maryland (0-1), 74-71 on Tuesday evening.
Four Cards finished in double figures as Brianna Peterson led the way with 20 points. Jenny McGann and Kate Robinson each added a strong offensive showing with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Owunna's 17 boards also set a new Landmark Conference record.
Steph Saint-Aubin tallied a double double for the Seahawks with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Pui Sham shot 6-for-11 from the field making all six for triples in the contest.
The Cardinals and Seahawks exchanged the lead over the first 10 minutes of the contest, but in an explosive final 10 minutes of the first half, the Cards broke out to a 13-point lead. At the break CUA led 42-29.
The Cards kept the offensive attack going in the second half extending their lead to as many as 16 with 11:36 remaining but foul trouble and strong shooting by the visitors cut the lead in the final two minutes.
In the final minute of play CUA held a 6-point lead and made 3-of-5 free throws and added a layup to secure the victory.
The Cardinals won the rebound battle as well, out rebounding St. Mary's 46-43. CUA shot 47.1% (16-34) in the first half and finished the game shooting 44.4% (28-63) from the field. The Cards also made 15-of-19 free throws with five players shooting 100%.
CUA returns to action on Friday, Nov. 20 at 1:30 p.m. as the Cardinals will face off against Ferrum in the opening round of the 2009 Marymount Marine Tip-Off Tournament.
