Despite Several Leads Women's Basketball Falls to
ARLINGTON, Va.-- Led by Brianna Peterson with 23 points, the CUA women's basketball team (1-2) fell to Ferrum College (1-0) 82-74 in the opening round of the Marymount-Marines Tipoff Tournament Friday afternoon.
Jenny McGann, Jill Woerner, and Kelly Ryan also gave double-figure performances in loss, contributing 16, 14, and 10 points, respectively. Woerner also pulled down six boards for the Cardinals.
The Panthers were led by Ashley Norton with 23 points. Ferrum also had two players with double-doubles in the contest, as Tonya Wright tallied 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Brittney Bullock recorded 19 points and 10 boards.
CUA beat Ferrum in nearly every statistical category throughout the contest, including shooting nearly 50% from the field (27-56). The Panthers were able to seal the victory at the charity stripe, however, sinking 24 free throws with 8:21 left in the contest.
The lead changed hands throughout most of the first half, but CUA secured a 10-point lead with just under three minutes to go in the opening period. The Panthers then went on an 11-1 run over the final 2:57 to knot the game at 37 at the break.
The second half was more of the same with nine lead changes. Ferrum's Ashley Norton hit two free throws to give the Panthers a 69-68 lead at the 4:05 mark. Over the final four minutes, Ferrum made 12 of 15 free throws while the Cardinals managed just four points.
The Cardinals will now face Randolph in the second round after the Wildcats fell to Gwynedd-Mercy 81-50. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m., at Marymount University in Arlington, Va.
