Early Lead Earns Women's Basketball 78-64 Victory
ARLINGTON, Va.-- After scoring 12 of the first 14 points in the contest, the CUA women's basketball team (2-2) dropped Randolph (0-2) by a score of 78-64 in the second round of the Marymount-Marines Tipoff Tournament Saturday morning.
Brianna Peterson led with the squad with 22 points, shooting 9-for-12 from the field, while freshman Kate Priftis added five of CUA's 22 assists in the contest. The team collectively pulled down 40 rebounds, leading to a +10 advantage on the boards as well as 12 second-chance points.
Katie Rechnitzer led the way for the Wildcats with 25 points, as Randolph turned the ball over 28 times.
After taking an early 10-point lead, back-to-back-to-back field goals cut the Cardinal lead to two. CUA went on another solid 11-2 run to break out to a 13-point lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The Cards finally sealed a 21-point advantage at the break.
In the second half it was more of the same as CUA held the lead throughout the half. The Wildcats never inched closer than the final 14-point deficit.
The Cardinals took 73 shots throughout the contest, finding mesh on 33 of them (45.2%) including six three-pointers. CUA dominated the boards throughout the contest grabbing 17 offensive rebounds, and out rebounding the Wildcats 40-30.
The Cards will return to action tomorrow the squad faces off against Rutgers-Newark, who defeated North Carolina-Wesleyan 73-27 earlier today. Tipoff is set for 11:30 a.m. on the final day of the Marymount-Marines Tipoff Tournament. The winner of the game will finish in fourth place while the loser will finish in sixth of the eight team tournament.
