Women's Basketball Drops Goucher 54-44
WASHINGTON-- Jenny McGann led the CUA women's basketball (6-2, 1-0 LC) team to a 54-44 win to open the Landmark Conference schedule against Goucher (2-5, 0-1 LC) on Saturday.
Brianna Peterson joined McGann in double figues, scoring 10 points and adding 10 boards for another double double. Kate Priftis added seven points and a season-high seven assists.
Victoria Mitchell led the way for the Gophers with 12 points and six boards in the loss.
The Cardinals fell behind early, but a 10-2 run put the Cards up by six with 12:29 remaining in the first half. Candra Scott cut the lead in half for Goucher, but CUA answered with six straight points and never allowed the Gophers back into the game. CUA led by as many as 16 in the first half, but settled on a 15-point advantage at the break.
In the second half, the Cardinals exchanged baskets with the visitors but solid free throw shooting in the final 1:40 proved to be all the hosts would need to ward off the Gopher attack.
In the game, CUA shot 21-of-50 (42.0%) from the field and converted 10-of-16 from the free throw line, while strong rebounding earned the Cardinals a 45-39 advantage on the boards.
CUA will return to action on Dec. 30 at Stevenson before returning to the DuFour Center for a Jan. 4 matchup against John Jay. Tipoff at Stevenson is set for 5 p.m.
