Women's Basketball Upset by Swarthmore, 65-57
WASHINGTON-- Despite a 21-point effort by Brianna Peterson, the CUA women's basketball team (8-3) fell to Swarthmore College (4-5) on Monday afternoon, 65-57, in the championship game of the 2010 CUA/Fairfield Inn Laurel Women's Basketball Classic.
Tournament MVP Kathryn Stockbower led the Garnet with 23 points and 20 rebounds, converting 8-of-14 from the field and 7-of-10 from the charity stripe. Genny Pezzola added 11 for Swarthmore.
Jill Woerner converted her second straight double double added 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Cardinals. Woerner also added three blocks and three steals.
The Cardinals trailed throughout the game, as Stockbower opened the game with Swarthmore's first nine points and recorded a double-double within the first 16-minutes of the contest. CUA cut the Garnet lead to one twice in the first half, but the visitors ended the first stanza with a 10-point advantage.
Stockbower scored 15 of her 23 points in the first half as the Cardinals made halftime adjustments and cut the lead to two with 12:07 remaining in the contest.
CUA stayed within a two possession game for nearly three minutes, but back-to-back field goals and four-straight free throws put the visitors up by 15 with only 5:52 remaining. The hosts cut back into the Garnet lead but failed to get any closer than seven down the stretch.
The Cardinals were out-rebounded by Swarthmore 48-41 in the contest, but CUA forced 21 Garnet turnovers.
CUA will return to action on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. as the Cardinals will face off against Juniata at the DuFour Center.
