Jill Woerner Drops 14 As CUA Makes A Late Push, But
Falls Short 71-67 Against Goucher
Towson, Md.-- In the final evening of Landmark Conference regular season action, the Cardinals (12-13, 4-10 LC) made a late run to cut the lead, but ran out of time as the Gophers (7-17, 3-11 LC) dropped CUA Saturday evening, 71-67.
Jill Woerner went 5-of-11 from the field to score 14 points for the Cards. Jenny McGann, Holly Janicki, and Kate Robinson each scored in double figures in the loss as well.
Elizabeth von Ende dropped 23 points for Goucher while Amber Smith added 18 points in the win.
The hosts jumped ahead early and never gave up the lead. But for the Cardinals it wasn't for lack of effort. After falling behind by as many as 15 with 3:36 remaining in the first half, the Cards chipped away at the lead, ultimately falling just short. With 2:57 left in the second half, Woerner robbed von Ende and drove to the basket for the lay in to put the Cards within one, 62-61.
Down the stretch Goucher converted only 5-of-8 free throws to open the door for CUA, but the rim was unforgiving and kept CUA off the board on two chances with under 20 seconds to play.
CUA will now await the NCAA and ECAC tournament selections to see if its 12-13 record will be enough to earn a bid to either tournament.
