Landmark Conference honors Briones for second time

WASHINGTON – Freshman Liz Briones was named the Landmark Conference Player of the Week on Monday, after scoring a season-high 23 points in the Cardinals 78-62 win over Goucher this past weekend.  The native of Texas earns her second weekly award from the conference after also receiving the honor on December 28.

Briones had quite a game for the Cardinals on Saturday, sinking 8 of 12 shots from the field and all six of her free throw attempts en route to a game-high 23 points.  The first-year forward also pulled down nine rebounds and added two steals and a block in only 23 minutes.

For the season, Briones is averaging 9 points and 5 rebounds, while shooting 51 percent from the floor and 84 percent at the charity stripe.  She has started 14 games for the Cardinals and is averaging 22 minutes per contest.

Briones and the rest of the Cardinals return to the court on Wednesday evening when CUA makes its first-ever appearance in the Landmark Conference Tournament.  The No. 4 Cardinals will travel to Pennsylvania to take on top-seeded Juniata in the semifinal round.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
