Cardinals ring in 2011 by hosting CUA/Fairfield Inn Tourney
WASHINGTON – The CUA women's basketball team will ring in 2011 when it hosts the CUA/Fairfield Inn Holiday Tournament on January 1 and 2 inside DuFour Gymnasium. The Cardinals will welcome Staten Island, Marymount and Manhattanville to the nation's capital for the two-day event.
CUA has been off since competing in Florida on December 20 and 21 at the Daytona Beach Shootout. The Cardinals downed Wentworth on the first day 67-54 behind a career-best 20 points from freshman Liz Briones. CUA held the Leopards to 34 percent shooting as it ran its win streak to six games.
Luther upended CUA 91-76 on day two of the event, as the Cardinals were done in by a 27 percent shooting performance in the final 20 minutes. Briones had another strong game with 15 points en route to earning the Landmark Conference Player of the Week award, while Jill Woerner tossed in 20 points.
Despite the loss in Florida, CUA is off to a terrific 7-2 start this season, including a 2-0 mark at home. The Cardinals are pulling down five more rebounds per game than their opponents, and hold a +3.0 advantage in turnover margin.
Individually, Woerner (15.7) and Jenny McGann (11) lead CUA in scoring, while Woerner is leading the squad in rebounding at 7.8 per contest.
CUA and Staten Island will get things started at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening with Manhattanville and Marymount to follow at 8. The consolation game will then take place at 6 p.m. on Sunday with the championship contest slated for an 8:00 start.
Following this weekend's tournament, CUA will head into the bulk of its conference slate, beginning on Friday, January 7 when it travels to take on Juniata.
