Cardinals ride strong second half to fourth straight win
MADISON, N.J. – Behind a balanced offensive attack CUA kept things rolling on Saturday afternoon with an 83-62 victory at Drew (7-7, 2-3 LC) to improve the Cardinals to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in the Landmark Conference. Liz Briones led CUA with 18 points, while Jill Woerner (15), Holly Janicki (14) and Jenny McGann (11) joined her in double digits.
CUA led by just four, 51-47, with 13:31 remaining in the game, before the Cardinals scored 15 of the next 18 points to extend to a 66-50 advantage with under ten to play.
Jenny McGann's three-pointer at the 6:55 mark put the Cardinals ahead by 20, and after three free throws by McGann and a jumper by Briones, CUA found itself on top by 25, 79-54.
Kelly Ryan's free throw with 53 ticks on the clock gave CUA its largest lead of the day at 27, but after Drew scored the final six points, the final margin was 21.
In addition to CUA's four double-figure scorers, senior Kerri Confrey netted six points and handed out 10 assists, while Emily Grabiak netted eight points and Katarina Owunna added seven. The Cardinals defense once again did a great job of creating turnovers as they forced 27 Drew miscues and totaled 15 steals.
CUA also outrebounded the Rangers 42-32 and outscored its counterparts 35-17 in points off turnovers.
Drew was led in scoring by Victoria Ault with 17 points, while Britta Olsen added 12. Jen Mateo totaled 10 assists and Jessica Reid pulled down eight rebounds, but the Rangers shot just 27 percent in the second half.
The teams were within four points of one another for the first 16 minutes of the game and were tied on six occasions during that time. A three-pointer by Janicki with 3:46 to play before halftime gave CUA a 37-32 lead, but Whitney Mackay answered down the other end for Drew to make it a two-point game.
After the score was tied 37 with 2:32 on the clock CUA ran off the final eight points of the half, capped by another Janicki three, to send the Cardinals into the locker room ahead 45-37.
The Cardinals will host Scranton their next time out on January 21 inside the DuFour Center Gymnasium. It will be CUA's first home Landmark Conference game of the season. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
