5/5/2008

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University women's lacrosse squad (15-4) had two players receive recognition from the Landmark Conference this past week.  Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) was named Player of the Week while Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) was selected the Defensive Player of the Week.  The Cardinals won the conference on Saturday and have received a bid in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

Robinson played a major role as the Cardinals earned two wins, both coming in the Landmark Tournament. In the championship match, the sophomore scored five goals on nine shots, while adding three ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover to help the team to a 21-10 victory. In the semifinal win over Susquehanna she again scored five goals, while adding three ground balls, one draw control and a caused turnover.  This is her third Player of the Week selection on the season.  Robinson was also First Team All-Landmark Conference and earned the Player of the Year award.

Brashear played a pair of strong games in net to help CUA in its championship. She yielded just 10 goals in the championship match win over Goucher, which came after she allowed six goals in the semifinal win. She stopped 17 shots over the two matches, and also picked up three ground balls. Her goals against average over the two games was 8.00 while she produced a .515 save percentage.  This is Brashear's second Defensive Player of the Week selection for the year.

The Cardinals will be playing the USA South Conference Champions the Christopher Newport Captains (13-5) on Wednesday in Newport News, Va.  The Cards will have an advantage on Wednesday against the Captains after playing them earlier in the season at Cardinal Stadium and coming out on top 17-14.  Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
