Cardinals ranked 11th in final IWLCA poll of 2012
WASHINGTON – The CUA women's lacrosse team is ranked No. 11 in the final IWLCA poll of the 2012 season, released earlier this week. The Cardinals went 16-6 in 2012, winning their fifth straight conference championship and advancing to their third NCAA Tournament Regional Final in the last five years along the way.
With its 16 wins this season, CUA has won 78 games during the last five seasons. The Cardinals completed their fourth undefeated regular season within the conference in the last five years this season, going 4-0 before knocking off Scranton and Susquehanna to capture the conference tournament title.
CUA then defeated Christopher Newport and Redlands in the NCAA Tournament to reach its third Regional Final in the last five years. The Cardinals have won at least one NCAA Tournament game in each of the last five seasons.
Individually, six Cardinals were named to the All-Conference Teams, including Mary Swarthout, who captured her third consecutive Player of the Year award. Lindsay Brophy was also named the Rookie of the Year.
Along with Swarthout and Brophy, Meghan Murray and Mallory Vogel received All-Chesapeake Region accolades, while Swarthout also went on to earn First Team All-America laurels from the IWLCA. Swarthout is the first multi-year First Team All-American in program history, and only the second player to be named a three-time All-American. Kate Robinson was the first to accomplish the feat.
CUA played nine teams this season that finished in the final top-20 poll, including Mary Washington (10), Salisbury (2), Washington & Lee (14), Trinity (1), Stevenson (RV), Messiah (9), Gettysburg (5), Susquehanna (RV), and Elizabethtown (17).
