Cardinals sweep Landmark Conference awards after 2-0 week
WASHINGTON – CUA swept the Landmark Conference Weekly Awards on Monday with Mary Swarthout capturing Offensive Player of the Week honors and Tricia Pehnke earning Defensive Player of the Week. The pair of Cardinals helped lead CUA to a pair of wins last week, including an exciting come-from-behind win over No. 10 Messiah.
Swarthout was nearly unstoppable in CUA's two games, totaling 11 goals, 7 assists, 18 draw controls, 9 ground balls and 5 caused turnovers.
She began her week with a season-high eight goals in CUA's 20-18 overtime win at Messiah. Swarthout also handed out two assists, won nine draw controls, picked up a trio of ground balls and caused three turnovers.
On Saturday, Swarthout scored three times, dished out five assists, scooped up six GBs, won nine draw controls and caused a pair of turnovers in the Cardinals' 19-10 win over Drew in the conference opener.
For the season, Swarthout leads CUA in goals (27), assists (12), points (39), draw controls (50), ground balls (25) and caused turnovers (13). She has won the Offensive Player of the Week award three times this season (4/2, 3/26, 3/5).
Pehnke had quite the week in goal for CUA. The freshman came on in relief during the Messiah game and responded with two saves in 23 minutes of action, allowing CUA to complete its comeback on the Falcons, and giving Pehnke her first career win.
Against Drew, Pehnke earned her first career start and looked good in doing so, sending back eight shots in 54 minutes of work, including seven in the first half.
Pehnke has appeared in three games this season, totaling 10 saves in 87 minutes of action.
Swarthout, Pehnke and the rest of the Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they host Haverford at 4 p.m. inside Cardinal Stadium.
