Cardinals pegged as favorites in Landmark Conference
WASHINGTON – After winning the previous four Landmark Conference championships, CUA has been installed as this year's favorite to capture a fifth straight title. The Cardinals earned every first place vote and 32 points in this year's preseason poll, which was announced on Tuesday.
CUA went 15-4 a season ago, including a perfect 4-0 mark during the Landmark Conference regular season. The Cardinals then defeated Goucher and Drew to earn their fourth consecutive conference title.
In addition to winning a conference championship, CUA won an NCAA Tournament game for the fourth straight year. The Cardinals have tallied double-digit victories in each of those four seasons and own a staggering 73-25 record over the last five seasons.
The Cardinals, who are ranked 11th in the IWLCA preseason poll, return four All-Conference performers from a season ago, led by First Team All-American Mary Swarthout. Meghan Murray, Gaby Sena and Megan Gormley joined Swarthout on the All-Conference team.
Following CUA in the Landmark poll are Drew (19 points) and Scranton (18 points). Rounding out things are Goucher (11) and Susquehanna (10).
CUA opens its 2012 season on Wednesday, February 29 when the Cardinals play host to Mary Washington in a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament First Round game, which CUA won 15-9. The opening draw control is set for 3:30 p.m.
