Cardinals down Goucher 18-10 to improve to 2-0 in Landmark
WASHINGTON – The No. 16 Cardinals raced out to a 13-3 halftime lead over Goucher en route to an 18-10 win on Thursday afternoon. Lindsay Brophy, Mallory Vogel, Erin Fowler and Theresa Ciletti scored three goals apiece in helping CUA improve to 2-0 in the Landmark Conference.
CUA finished with a 47-20 advantage in shots and the Cardinals scooped up 33 ground balls to the Gophers' 30. CUA also held a decided advantage in draw controls, winning 22 of 30, led by Mary Swarthout with eight. Brophy won five and Kelly Neligan finished with four.
Swarthout and Brophy led the Cardinals with seven ground balls apiece, and Swarthout, Brophy and Caroline DiBartolomeo caused two turnovers each.
Ciletti scored the game's first goal just 10 seconds in, and Meghan Brady followed with CUA's second goal 42 seconds later.
Ciletti and Vogel added two more scores for a 4-0 lead, and Fowler netted back-to-back goals to give the Cardinals a 6-0 lead at the 14:32 mark of the first half.
Anneke Ossorio got Goucher on the board with a goal at the 13:31 mark, but Swarthout and Vogel answered with two straight scores to up the CUA lead to 8-1.
Goals by Ossorio and Hannah Khin cut the CUA lead to five with 9:25 to play in the half, but the Cardinals responded with a 5-0 run to end the half with a 10-goal advantage.
Brophy scored twice during the run, while Ciletti, Mary Robinson and Vogel added a goal apiece.
Goucher scored the first two goals of the second half to make it 13-5 with 26:05 to play, but Brophy's score at the 24:29 mark pushed CUA's lead back to nine.
The Gophers continued to hang tough, scoring three straight to get within 14-8 at the 15:42 mark, but CUA again answered, this time with a 4-0 run to surge in front by 10 with 6:25 on the clock.
Fowler, Katie Miller, Gretchen Wade and Swarthout each scored during the 4-0 run.
Goucher scored the final two goals but CUA's early lead proved to be too much and helped send the Cardinals to their seventh win of the season.
Tricia Pehnke got the start and earned the win for CUA in goal, stopping three shots in 39 minutes of work, before Yasmeen Ajdari came on in relief and sent back two shots.
Gophers goal keeper Ashley Shaner stopped 20 shots, while Ossorio and Khin led the visitors with four goals each.
CUA will return to action on Wednesday, April 11 when the Cardinals play host to No. 2 Gettysburg. The opening draw is set for 4:30 p.m.
