Cardinals sweep weekly awards after winning fifth title
WASHINGTON – After helping CUA win its fifth consecutive Landmark Conference championship over the weekend, Meghan Brady and Megan Gormley were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week on Tuesday. Brady netted the game-winning goal in the conference championship game, while Gormley played one of her best games of the season on defense.
Brady was one of CUA's top offensive performers last week, scoring five goals, picking up seven ground balls and causing five turnovers in a pair of wins.
The senior began her week with a hat trick, five ground balls and three caused turnovers in the Cardinals' 14-11 win over Scranton in the tournament semifinals on May 2.
Brady then scored two goals, including the game-winner, in CUA's 12-10 win over Susquehanna in the title match. Both of Brady's goals came in the final 7:15, including the clincher with 2:48 on the clock. She also picked up two ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers.
Gormley was equally effective on the defensive end, totaling six ground balls, eight caused turnovers and one draw control in the two wins.
Gormley registered one ground ball, one draw control and two caused turnovers in the semifinal win over Scranton, and then exploded for five ground balls and six caused turnovers in the championship. With Gormley leading the way, CUA forced Susquehanna into 22 turnovers and a 19-of-29 showing in clear attempts.
With this week's two awards, CUA has collected ten total weekly awards from the conference this season.
CUA is back in action on Wednesday afternoon when the Cardinals play host to Christopher Newport in the 2012 NCAA Tournament First Round. Start time from inside Cardinal Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
