CUA heads to Salisbury for NCAA Regional this weekend

WASHINGTON – After easily dispatching of Christopher Newport 18-5 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, CUA heads to the regional round this weekend in Salisbury, Md.  The Cardinals will take on University of Redlands on Saturday, with host Salisbury going up against St. John Fisher in the other semifinal.

With Wednesday's win, CUA has now won at least one game in each of the last five NCAA Tournaments.  Senior Meghan Brady led the Cardinals with a game-high seven goals, as CUA rolled to a 12-0 halftime lead on the Captains.

Five other Cardinals netted two goals apiece, while Mary Swarthout led the way by winning eight draw controls and Mallory Vogel was the team leader in caused turnovers with two.

CUA's defense played one of its best games of the season, holding CNU off the scoreboard until 21:21 was left in the second half.  The Cardinals forced 15 turnovers, won 21 of 25 draw controls and limited the Captains to only four first half shots.

The 13-goal margin of victory was CUA's largest in its NCAA Tournament history, and the win improved the Cardinals to 3-0 all-time vs. CNU in the tourney.

Swarthout continues to lead CUA in every major statistical category, including goals (60) assists (29), points (89), ground balls (63), draw controls (117) and caused turnovers (34).  Brady is the second leading goal scorer with 48 and Vogel checks in at number-three with 42 scores.

Tricia Pehnke improved to 10-0 on the year with her win in goal on Wednesday, sending back 10 shots vs. CNU.  The freshman has played over 500 minutes this season, stopping 71 shots during that time, and posting a .546 save percentage.

Coming all the way across the country from California, Redlands earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory on Wednesday evening, downing in-state rival Occidental 15-14.

It marked the second straight win for the Bulldogs over Occidental, after winning the SCIAC championship on April 29 by a score of 10-7.  Redlands enters this weekend with an impressive 16-1 mark, including a 9-1 record within the SCIAC.

Five Bulldogs have scored at least 30 goals in 2012, led by KK McCaslin (46), Jacky Craycraft (44) and Megan Prickett (42).  Crystal Painter is the team leader in ground balls with 35 and in draw controls with 66.

Ana Martinez is the team's top goalkeeper, with 113 saves in 1,026 minutes of action.  She has faced 356 shots for the year and enters the weekend with a goals against average of 9.30.

Salisbury and St. John Fisher will get things started at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.  The CUA – Redlands match will follow at 2:30.  The two winners will then meet on Sunday in the Regional Championship at 1 p.m. on the campus of Salisbury.
