Cardinals ready to begin season on Wednesday vs. Eagles
WASHINGTON – Four-time defending Landmark Conference champion CUA opens its 2012 season on Wednesday in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament First Round game, won by the Cardinals. CUA welcomes Mary Washington to town to get the season underway.
CUA is coming off yet another successful season in 2011, when the Cardinals went 15-4, won their fourth straight conference title and won a game in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year.
The Cardinals bring back four All-Conference performers, led by First Team All-American Mary Swarthout. She is just the second CUA player ever to earn First Team All-American accolades.
Also returning from the All-Conference Team are Meghan Murray, Gabby Sena and Megan Gormley.
In the midfield, Head Coach Meghan McDonogh brings back Theresa Ciletti, Gretchen Wade, Erin Fowler, Kelly Neligan and Katie Shields.
The attack will be led by returners Meghan Brady and Darcy Resch, while on defense Caroline Scalamandre and Katie Shields lead the way.
CUA is in good shape in goal, bringing back Sena and Yasmeen Ajdari, while welcoming in freshman Tricia Pehnke.
Mary Washington has played twice already this season, downing St. Joseph (N.Y.) and Wesley, and falling to Gettysburg.
Keller Torrey leads the Eagles in scoring with 14 points, while Catherine Kennedy is the leading goal scorer with nine. Katie Mastropaolo leads the team in ground balls with 10, and Jenny Atmar's seven draw controls lead the way.
In goal for Mary Washington, Kathryn Stiltz has made 16 saves in 124 minutes of action, having faced 48 shots during that time.
Wednesday's game begins at 3:30 inside Cardinal Stadium. CUA will then head to Salisbury on Saturday before traveling to South Carolina for a two-game spring break trip.
