No. 18 CUA falls to nation's top-ranked team
WASHINGTON – No. 18 CUA had its hands full with the
nation’s No. 1 ranked team on Wednesday, falling to Trinity
20-2 inside Cardinal Stadium. The Bantams scored the first five
goals of the game and jumped out to a 12-1 halftime lead en route
to their fourth straight win. Lindsay Brophy and Theresa Ciletti
scored goals for CUA.
Following a scoreless five minutes to begin the game, Trinity
scored five goals in a span of 3:58 to open up a 5-0 lead on the
Cards.
Ciletti got CUA on the board with a goal at the 20:03 mark to pull
the Cards within four, but the Bantams came right back with three
scores in a span of 2:14 to give the visitors an 8-1 lead with
12:43 to play before the half.
Trinity added four more scores before intermission to open up a
12-1 advantage at the break.
Trinity’s Haley Thompson scored the first goal of the second
half 4:44 in to give the Bantams a 12-goal lead.
Brophy netted the Cardinals second goal with 8:17 on the clock,
but that was all the offense CUA was able to generate on this
day.
Trinity finished with a 36-9 advantage in shots, while CUA won the
ground ball battle, 22-20.
Megan Gormley, Adair Douglas and Brophy scooped up three ground
balls apiece for the Cards, while Maddy Nowakowski, Katie Miller
and Gormley caused two turnovers.
Tricia Pehnke stopped 10 shots in goal for CUA, before giving way
to Yasmeen Ajdari for the final 11 minutes.
The Bantams received three saves from starting ‘keeper Olivia
Whitney, before Emily Mooney came in and sent back one shot in 30
minutes of work.
The No. 18 Cardinals remain at home for their next game, hosting
Washington and Lee on Senior Day on Saturday morning. The opening
draw is set for 11:30 a.m. from inside Cardinal Stadium.
