Quick Start Helps Cardinals to 21-8 Season Opening Win
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University women's lacrosse team began the 2014 season with a bang tonight. Freshman Laura Dunn wasted no time making an impact in her collegiate debut, as she won the opening draw control, made her way down field and scored just ten seconds later.
Catholic (1-0) would score the next three goals, courtesy of back-to-back goals from rookie Madeline Wilson, and the first career goal for Jenna Van Middelem to put CUA up 4-0 less than five minutes into the game.
Megan White stopped the bleeding for the Bobcats (0-2) on a free position shot at 21:31. The Cardinals responded as Dunn won the ensuing draw control, and similar to the first play of the game, made her way into Frostburg territory before dishing off to Anna Stumme who found the back of the net 13 seconds later.
Stumme's goal would ignite another 4-0 Catholic run with goals from Clair Schmitzer, Alexis Bosilovic, and the Cards' leading goal scorer from last season, Lindsay Brophy. Just over halfway through the first half, Catholic led 8-1.
Over the next 14:44, Catholic outscored the Bobcats 8-4 to take a 16-5 lead into halftime. In the first 30 minutes of action, the Cardinals turned the ball over just twice, compared to 10 Frostburg miscues. CUA was also a perfect 4-4 on its clear attempts and connected on 6-10 free position shots.
Brophy kept things moving to start the second half, scoring her third goal of the game at 27:13. The junior then assisted classmate Nicole Laitner just three minutes later to put Catholic up 18-5.
The teams went back and forth for the next six goals as the Cardinals would take home their first win of the season, 21-8.
Catholic dominated the draw controls 24-7, and were helped by Dunn and Bosilovic who each had seven.
Defensively, the Cardinals worked to deny the Bobcats of any scoring opportunities and allowed just eight goals. Last season, the Cardinals opponents scored at least 10 goals in 16 of their 18 games.
Tonight's game saw six Cardinals score three goals, as Schmitzer, Dunn, Wilson, Stummer, Brophy, and Bosilivic all recorded hat tricks. Jenna Van Middelem finished with two goals, a ground ball, and a caused turnover.
Catholic will stay on the road as they return to action on Saturday, March 1 when they travel to Salisbury to take on the defending National Champions.
