Cardinals Shut Out Penn St. Abington

WASHINGTON - Madeline Wilson scored four times and handed out two assists to help the Catholic University women's lacrosse team to a 19-0 shutout of Penn St. Abington (0-2) in the team's home opener on Sunday, March 9.

Catholic started its dominance early, as Clair Schmitzer won the opening draw control for the Cardinals. Lindsay Brophy found the back of the net just 28 seconds into the game, proving to be the game-winner.

Less than five minutes into the contest, Catholic found themselves with a 5-0 lead as Brophy tallied her second goal of the game and Laura Dunn, Wilson and Caroline DiBartolomeo each scored once.

The Cardinals took a 15-0 led into halftime, thanks in part to winning all but one of the draw controls.

CUA had 12 different goal scorers for the afternoon as Dunn, Brophy, Theresa Ciletti and Anastasia Brandenburg all finished with two scores each. Elizabeth McCooey, Alexis Bosilovic, Nicole Laitner, Mary Clare Regan, Erin Macchione, Madeline Nowakowski and Mary Clare Regan rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals.

For the game, Catholic held a 21-8 advantage in groundballs and was a perfect 3-3 in clears. Yasmeen Ajdari and Tricia Pehnke split time in the cage again for the Cardinals but a stiffling defense prevented the Nittany Lions from attempting a single shot against the goalies.

Catholic (2-1) returns to action when they travel to St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday, March 12 for a 3:00 p.m. start time.
