WASHINGTON - Kerri Nicolich scored a hat trick for York (Pa.) as the No. 11 Spartans defeated Catholic 10-4 on Wednesday afternoon in Cardinal Stadium.
The Spartans (8-3) got out to a 3-0 lead behind two goals from Nicolich and another from Gina Bieneman by the 16:20 mark.
Madeline Wilson put the Cardinals (5-4) on the scoreboard at 14:16 on her team-leading 14th goal of the season.
After the Spartans earned posession, they scored five unanswered goals over the next 22 minutes and into the second half to take an 8-2 lead with 19:53 left to play.
The Cardinals called timeout to regroup as Caroline DiBartolomeo scored on the next posession to cut the deficit but YCP responded with a goal of their own on a free position shot.
Theresa Ciletti scored the final goal for the Cards off of an assist by Wilson as the two teams traded goals one more time for a final 10-4 score.
Yasmeen Ajdari recorded 15 saves in between the pipes, while her counterpart picked up eight.
Despite owning an 11-5 advantage in draw controls, the Cardinals were plagued by 26 turnovers. The Spartans had a 29-24 control in ground balls and rattled off 32 shots to CUA's 20. YCP was also able to take advantage of their chances from the 8-meter mark, connecting on two free position attempts while the Cardinals were 0-4.
Schmitzer picked up a game-high six groundballs for CUA. Victoria Neill and DiBartolomeo each caused four Spartan turnovers, while Schmitzer and Brophy combined for seven draw controls.
Catholic returns to action this Saturday, April 5 when they host Landmark foe Scranton (2-4) at 3:00 p.m. in Cardinal Stadium.
