The 1998 season was the inaugural one for women's lacrosse, and the team didn't have to wait long for the program's first win. The Cardinals defeated Marymount at the DuFour Center on March 17 in the second game of their inaugural season.
The Cardinals started off strong, with a goal from senior Patricia Fontecchio 13 seconds into the game, and led 6-1 before Marymount rallied to tie the game at halftime. Fontecchio finished with a goal and two assists on the afternoon, while freshman Michelle Matulac led all scorers with six goals. Matulac finished the season with 7.15 points and 6.46 goals per game, the best in Division III.
Matulac scored seven goals in the Cardinals' loss to Division I Stanford and added nine more against Dickinson. Catholic followed up the Marymount win with wins against Mary Baldwin and Trinity.
