WASHINGTON - Senior goalie Amanda Lewis (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) posted 18 saves and junior Anna Gateau (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) scored a game-high four goals to lead Catholic past Goucher, 8-7, in an exciting CAC first round playoff game at DuFour Field.
Catholic never trailed but had to fend off several comebacks by the Gophers. CUA led 3-0 in the first half on goals by Gateau and senior Ann Lawall (Newtown, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie). Goucher's Ashley Snyder scored two of her three goals and teammate Muffie Bliss rallied the Gophers to make it 3-3 with six minutes to go in the half. Lawall added her second tally before the time expired, giving CUA a 4-3 halftime edge.
The second half saw CUA once again build a three-goal lead but only to have Goucher make a comeback and tie the game. Snyder's third goal at the 10:07 mark made it a 7-7 game.
Gateau saved her best goal for last as she put home an unassisted tally for the game-winner with two minutes to play.
With the win, the Cardinals move into the CAC semifinals where they will take on the top-seeded Seahawks of St. Mary's on Friday in St. Mary's City, Md.
