Cardinals Flatten Captains
Balanced attack sinks Christopher Newport
NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Catholic University women's lacrosse squad (5-3) picked up a 13-9 win over the Christopher Newport Captains (7-4) Sunday afternoon in Virginia. The team had nine different players score goals and eleven point scorers on the afternoon.
The Cardinals established a commanding 8-2 lead in the first half led by two scores from Jackie Seward (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney). Jessie Euler (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) continued to play well for the Cards connecting on one shot in first and assisting on two more. CUA was 1-2 in the opening half on free position shots with Katie Bitonti (North Potomac, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) making one to start the game.
In the second half the Cardinals were up by as much as eight thanks to two scores to open the period. However, a flurry of substitutions gave the Captains a chance to get back in the game as they connected on a pair making the score 10-4. The Cards managed to stop the Captain run with a goal by Kate Narzikul (Philadelphia, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) at 20:27 and from that point on CUA maintained control of the game. After 60 minutes and every player on the Cardinal roster seeing significant minutes, CUA had the 13-9 victory.
The Cards were led by Marcy Cuneo (Haddonfield, N.J./Camden Catholic), Courtney Murray (Langhorne, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie), Laura Haring (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai ) and Seward who all scored a pair of goals. Murray scored the most points for CUA with four after scoring twice and assisting on two more. The Cards outshot the Captains 31-26 and won 15 draw controls. Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) took the win in the cage with 11 saves.
CUA will play Goucher at home this Thursday, the game is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
