CUA holds St. Mary's scoreless in the second half
WASHINGTON - Jackie Seward (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) and Marcy Cuneo (Haddonfield, N.J./Camden Catholic) each scored two goals and the CUA defense stepped it up in the second half to propel the Catholic University women's lacrosse team (3-1, 1-0 CAC) over the #14 St. Mary's Seahawks (2-3, 1-1 CAC), 6-5, Tuesday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium. The win gives CUA its first in the Capital Athletic Conferece and improved the squad to 3-1 overall.
Lauren Carrier scored St. Mary's first two goals before junior Katie Bitoni (North Potomac, Md./Good Counsel) hit a free position shot at 14:51 to make it 2-1. The Seahawks rattled off three more scores in the first half. At 1:24 Cuneo connected on a free position to make the score 5-2 going into the locker room.
The Cards came out ready to play in the second half with Seward notching her two tallies back to back early in the half. As the Cardinal defense stayed tough, Cuneo hit another free position to pull CUA within one. Finally at 10:04 junior Jackie Lodge (Bethesda, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) found the back of the cage off of a pass from Jackie Getty (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) giving CUA their first lead of the game.
With ten minutes still remaining the Cards forced a number of turnovers to keep the ball in their possession. In the final minute, St. Mary's had a chance to tie it up with a free position attempt but freshman keeper Melissa Brashear (Pittsburg, Pa./Oakland Catholic) made the save of the day and gave CUA the 6-5 win.
CUA outshot St. Mary's 25-20 and also held the advantage in draw controls, 7-6. Brashear ended with nine saves for the day and the Cardinal defense combined for 16 caused turnovers.
