Yellow Jackets Edge Cards 13-11
CUA gears up for CAC tournament on Sunday
ASHLAND, Va.- The Catholic University women's lacrosse team's streak came to an abrupt end Tuesday afternoon as they suffered a heartbreaking 13-11 loss to the Randolph Macon Yellow Jackets (9-4). With the loss the Cards drop to 11-4 on the season.
Freshman scorer Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) connected early on for the Cards but the Yellow Jackets quickly answered with a pair of scores to take the lead. Marcy Cuneo (Haddonfield, N.J./Camden Catholic) then went on a small run of her own for CUA at 19:06 finding the back of the cage on a free position and once more a minute later. But just as before Randolph Macon had a reply notching two more. Robinson and Jessie Euler (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) were the bookends on one more RMC goal tying it up at 5-5 with less than five minutes remaining. However, the CUA defense couldn't hold on and allowed two more Yellow Jacket scores before the halftime horn to make it 7-5 going into the break.
Randolph Macon used the late first half surge and carried it into the second starting out with two more goal giving them their largest lead of the game at four. Jackie Seward (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) finally ended the run on a score from Cuneo at 24:43 but the Cards had an uphill battle ahead of them. For every Cardinal goal the Yellow Jackets had an immediate answer never allowing CUA to get back in the game. Despite two late scores from Robinson it wasn't enough as the Cards fell 13-11.
Robinson led the Cards with five goals in the game while Seward had two goals and as many assists. CUA outshot RMC 30-27 and had four fewer turnovers as well as 16 draw controls to the Yellow Jacket's nine. However, Randolph Macon held the advantage in groundballs (16-12) and saves (15-8).
CUA will play in the first round of the CAC Tournament on Sundays. Pairings will not come out until late Friday evening.
