Cards Down Spartans, 13-9
Robinson has three goals for the game
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University women's lacrosse squad topped the York Spartans (3-6, 2-4 CAC) 13-9 Monday afternoon in Pennsylvania. The win keeps CUA on its four-game win streak after defeating nationally-ranked Washington & Lee last Saturday. The Cards also improve to 8-3 on the year and 3-2 in the Capital Athletic Conference.
The Cards struck first as Jessie Euler (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson ) hit a goal less than a minute in off of a Spartan turnover. The lead was short lived, however, with York connecting at 21:55. The Spartans went ahead by one but once again the Cards came back thanks to a score by CAC athlete of the week Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin ). At 14:00 Marcy Cuneo (Haddonfield, N.J./Camden Catholic) managed an unassisted tally and the Cards were back on top 3-2. From that point on the Cardinals dominated scoring three straight including another from Robinson.
York made a run of their own with minutes left in the half scoring back to back goals in just 14 seconds and a third 17 ticks later. After giving up a string of scores the Cards stabilized the defense, won the draw control and went to score making it 7-5 at the break.
Both teams were scoreless for the opening ten minutes of the second half but at 19:33 the Cards gained some momentum scoring two quick goals in just 15 second. The scores included one from Katie Bitonti (North Potomac, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and the other from Courtney Murray (Langhorne, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie). However just like the first half the Spartans answered with two goals before CUA took a timeout. After the break the Cards came back with a vengeance netting a pair of scores from Euler and Murray making it 11-7. York connected on two more but it wouldn't be enough as CUA managed the 13-9 victory.
Despite handily defeating the Spartans, the Cards didn't dominate in the stats. CUA outshot York 27-24 and had just 25 groundballs to their 23. Both goalkeepers tallied nine saves for the game and the Cards held the slight 13-10 advantage in draw controls. Robinson led the squad with three goals while Cuneo had a two goals and as many assists.
CUA will host Villa Julie on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
