CUA's Quick Start Secures 15-12 Victory
Robinson scores four goals in the game
SALEM, Va. - The Catholic University women's lacrosse team defeated the Roanoke College Maroons (3-4) Sunday afternoon in a tight 15-12 contest. The Cards put together a strong first half and managed to hold on to improve to 5-1 overall.
Every time Roanoke attacked in the first half, the Cardinals answered with double. Meghan Sabo (Bell Canyon, Calif./Louisville) sandwiched a Maroon goal to start the contest putting the Cards up 2-1 just ten minutes in. Roanoke scored at 19:31 but Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin ) answered with a pair of her own. At 12:58 the Maroons managed to get the ball past keeper Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) but the response came twofold with goals from Caitlin O'Neill (Germantown, Md./Holy Child) and Caroline Taltavull (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg). This pattern continued through the remainder of the first making it 10-5 CUA at the break.
The Cardinal defense let up a bit in the second half and the offense couldn't keep up their momentum as Roanoke started the second with three goals. Finally at 22:49, Sabo found the back of the cage but the Maroons had made a game of it. Taltavull's second goal put the Cards up by three and in the final six minutes CUA posted a three-goal run of their own to make the final 15-12.
The Cardinals were outshot and had fewer groundballs but in the end the score was in their favor. Robinson led CUA with four goals while Sabo had three and Taltavull two. Brashear was in goal and had six saves in the game.
The Cardinals will play at St. Mary's on Thursday in a 4 p.m., contest.
