#8 Generals Overpower Cards
Cuneo and Robinson combine for eight goals
LEXINGTON, Va. - The Catholic University women's lacrosse team (5-4) dropped a 17-11 decision to the #8 Washington & Lee Generals (10-1) Thursday afternoon in Virginia. The Cardinals trailed by just two at the break but allowed 10 second half scores by the Generals.
The teams traded goals throughout the first ten minutes but at the 20 minute mark, W&L added a pair and CUA was only able to answer with one on a shot from Lindsay Davenport. The Generals made it 5-3 midway through but at this point in the game CUA gained momentum and made a run. Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) and Marcy Cuneo (Haddonfield, N.J./Camden Catholic) each scored to tie the score at five. Unfortunately the defense couldn't hold on and allowed a pair of General goals three minutes before the break to make the score 7-5 at half.
W&L continued their run with a goal less than a minute into the second and despite some scoring spurts, CUA was unable to keep up. Becky Borrell (Oreland, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) brought the deficit back to two at 27:54 but the Generals answered with three tallies. Robinson and Cuneo once again notched back to back scores and despite a opposing goal, one more from Cuneo made the score 12-9. That would be CUA's final chance, however, as W&L went on a 4-0 run and even with one more pair from the team of Robinson and Cuneo it wasn't enough. At the final horn the score was 17-11.
The Cards did attempt three more shots and committed four fewer turnovers in the contest but the W&L shooting proved to be too much as CUA came up with just four saves. Cuneo and Robinson each had four goals in the game while Cuneo notched two assists and Robinson one.
The Cardinals will host the Christopher Newport Captains on Saturday at Cardinal Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
