Cardinals Best Captains 17-14
Robinson scores five goals in the game
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University women's lacrosse team managed to hold on for the 17-14 victory over the Christopher Newport Captains (5-4) Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium. Despite leading by seven goals at the half, the Cards gave up a number in the second as it came down to the wire. With the victory, CUA improves to 6-4 on the season.
The Cardinals seemed to be in control in the first half as they scored two early and a even with a four-goal comeback from the Captains, CUA held the tempo of the game. Trailing by two, the Cards went on a 10-2 run three goals from Marcy Cuneo (Haddonfield, N.J./Camden Catholic) and two from Katie Buonpatore (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) as well as Meghan Sabo (Bell Canyon, Calif./Louisville). The Cardinal rally made the score 13-6 at the break as CUA seemed to have the game.
The Captains, however, came out in the second with some offensive adjustments. CNU scored one early but Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) answered for CUA at 28:03. For the next 12 minutes, the Captains took over with five unanswered goals before Robinson could end the rally at the 16:15 mark. With the lead cut to just three, CUA dug in and went goal for goal with the Captains in the remaining minutes to hold on for the 17-14 victory.
Robinson led the Cards with five goals and one assist, while Cuneo had three scores in the game. Also contributing two goals each were Buonpastore, Sabo and Katie Bitonti (North Potomac, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel). The Cardinals outshot the Captains 37-27 and won draw controls 26-7, but also had three fewer ground balls. CUA was 5-12 on the day for free position shots.
Defensively, Bitonti and Robinson each led the squad with two caused turnovers. In goal Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic ) was awarded the win after seven saves in sixty minutes played.
The Cards will host Mary Washington on Wednesday at Cardinal Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
