Defense Holds Off Quakers 18-8
Cards allow just two second half goals
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Catholic University women's lacrosse squad moved to 3-0 on the season Tuesday afternoon with an 18-8 victory over the Guilford College Quakers (0-3). Once again the Cards had a slow first half but turned on both the offense and defense in the second to outscore Guilford 10-2.
Guilford scored first but CUA quickly responded with shots from Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Week Meg Sabo (Bell Canyon, Calif./Louisville) as well as Laura Haring (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai). A pair of Quaker goals quieted the CUA offense but at 18:19 the Cards exploded for a 4-0 run led by two scores from Becky Borrell (Oreland, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy). Leading 6-3, the Cardinals seemed to have their offense in check but in the final eight minutes they were outscored 3-2 to go into the break leading by a close 8-6.
After a disappointing ending to the first half, the Cards wasted no time in the second scoring nine unanswered goals, including three from Marcy Cuneo (Haddonfield, N.J./Camden Catholic), to take a commanding 17-6 lead with nine minutes remaining. With the clock running due to the 10-point deficit, it was up to the defense to hold off any Guilford counters. The Quakers managed two goals in the closing minutes and CUA's Caitlin O'Neill (Germantown, Md./Holy Child) also added one to make the final 18-8.
Sabo posted a team-high four goals in the game while Cuneo had three and five separate players notched two. Cuneo and Sabo also each had an assist in the game. O'Neill posted a solid all-around performance with two goals, seven groundballs and three caused turnovers. Caroline Taltavull (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) was the possession specialist acquiring five draw controls. In the net, Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic ) played all 60 minutes and had four saves.
The Cardinals will have a few days off to relax over spring break before traveling to Salisbury to play the #2 Seagulls on Saturday at 1 p.m.
