#2 Salisbury Serves CUA First Loss of the Season
Cards struggle to score in the second half
SALISBURY, Md.- The Catholic University women's lacrosse squad (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of the #2 Salisbury Sea Gulls (6-0). The former Capital Athletic Conference rivals showed why they are ranked in the nation in the 21-8 victory.
After beating up on teams for the last three games the Cardinals needed the first few minutes of play to adjust to a different style. The Sea Gulls took advantage taking a commanding 5-0 lead ten minutes in. Finally at 19:47 Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin ) hit CUA's first goal off of a pass from Marcy Cuneo (Haddonfield, N.J./Camden Catholic) and the Cards managed to get back in the game. Cuneo then scored another to make it 5-2 but once again Salisbury answered. The Sea Gulls continued the shooting clinic but the Cards up front held strong as Cuneo notched her second goal of the game and freshman Meghan Sabo (Bell Canyon, Calif./Louisville) had a pair in the final 12 minutes of the half to make it 12-5 at the break.
The second half was more of the same for CUA as they scored but couldn't stop the powerful Sea Gull attack. Sabo scored first for CUA on a free position but once again Salisbury rattled off four straight scores. Cuneo hit her third of the afternoon through the driving rain at 14:28 but a 5-0 run from the Sea Gulls proved too much. Robinson's goal with 30 second remaining made the final 21-8.
CUA was outshot 34-17 and had 16 ground balls to Salisbury's 25. Despite the discrepancy the Cards had only four more turnovers one less draw control. Sabo and Cuneo each had three goals while two Sea Gulls scored five each. Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic ) took the loss in goal playing all 60 minutes with eight saves.
The Cards will host Randolph-Macon on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., at Cardinal Stadium.
