Women's Lax Dominates in Season Opener
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University of America women's lacrosse team (1-0) opened up their season Saturday afternoon with a decisive victory over Adrian College (0-1). The Cardinals, favored to win the Landmark Conference this season, defeated the Bulldogs with a score of 13-8 on their home field.
CUA jumped out to an early 3-0 lead off two goals from Katie Bitonti (North Potomac, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and one from teammate Kiki Sackett (Olney, Md./Magruder). The Cards then traded scoring opportunities with the Bulldogs throughout the remainder of the first half, ending the period with a slight 6-5 edge.
In the second half, the Red and blacked opened up the scoring with three consecutive goals by Laura Haring (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai), Taltavull, and Bitonti to put them ahead 9-5. The Bulldogs then found the back of the net off of a free position shot, but CUA's Mary Swarthout (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) answered by scoring all three of her goals in a five-minute span.
Haring put an exclamation point on the dominating Cardinal offense with a goal assisted by Bitonti at the 10-minute mark. Adrian responded with two back-to-back goals in the closing minutes, but the damage had already been done. CUA ran away with a commanding 13-8 victory.
The Cardinals dominated in nearly every statistical category, outshooting their opponent 38-22 and winning the groundball advantage (29-20). Leading the way for the Cardinal squad was Bitonti with four goals and one assist. Swarthout contributed three goals and six ground balls, while Taltavull and Haring added two goals apiece.
CUA returns to the field for a 1 p.m., contest at home against Washington and Lee on Saturday, February 28th.
