No. 2 Salisbury Edges Women's Lax
WASHINGTON- The No. 11 Catholic University women's lacrosse team had their hands full on Sunday afternoon, falling to second-ranked Salisbury University 21-9 in a non-conference match up at Cardinal Stadium. With the loss, CUA drops to 1-2 on the year, while Salisbury improves to 6-0.
The Cardinals saw offensive production from a number of sources, as Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin), Laura Haring (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai), and Mary Swarthout (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) each tallied two goals and one assist apiece. Swarthout and Caroline Taltavull (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) also contributed four ground balls, while goalie Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) recorded 10 saves in the loss.
Salisbury struck first on the offensive end, but CUA's Haring immediately responded with an unassisted goal at the 27 minute mark. The squad struggled on the defensive end, giving up 9 goals to the Sea Gulls in the remainder of the half. CUA headed into halftime trailing 10-6.
Kiki Sackett (Olney, Md./Magruder) brought the Cards to within three with a goal just 21 seconds into the half. Salisbury then went on an 11-0 run midway through the second half that went unanswered by CUA. Despite two goals by Robinson and Kate Narzikul (Media, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy), the Cards were unable to close the12 goal gap before the final buzzer sounded.
The squad returns to the action on Tuesday for another non-conference game against Guilford College. The home contest is set for 3 p.m.
