Cardinals Rally Past McDaniel
WASHINGTON- Led by the stellar shooting of Mary Swarthout (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin), the Catholic University of America women's lacrosse team sailed to a 18-13 victory over McDaniel College on their home turf Thursday afternoon. With the win, the squad improves to 3-2 on the year, while McDaniel drops to 3-2.
Swarthout led the Cards with an impressive five goals and two assists, while Robinson tallied four goals and three assists. They also recorded three and four groundballs, respectively. Katie Buonpastore (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) also chipped in two goals, two assists, and three groundballs. Caroline Taltavull (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) led the team with 8 draw controls, and goalie Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) added 11 saves in the victory.
CUA and McDaniel traded back-and-forth goals in the opening minutes of the game, until Swarthout knotted the first of three consecutive goals at the 15 minute mark. From that point on, the Cardinals outscored the Green Terror 5-1 to end the half with a solid 8-5 advantage.
The offensive rampage continued in the early in the second half, as Robinson and Buonpastore scored three goals in the first two minutes. Although McDaniel was able to find the back of the net on several occasions, the Cards fired back with seven goals of their own before the final buzzer sounded. Back-to-back goals by the Green Terror in the closing minutes were not enough to overcome CUA's decisive lead, and the Cardinals soared to the 18-13 victory.
CUA will return to the field on Sunday, March 15th for a 2 p.m., home contest against Roanoke.
