Cardinals Keep Winning Streak Alive
WASHINGTON- The #13 Catholic University's women's lacrosse team earned their fourth consecutive win on Wednesday afternoon, defeating #16 St. Mary's College (Md.) 16-11 at Cardinal Stadium. With the win, CUA improves to 5-2 on the year, while St. Mary's drops to 6-2.
Leading the offensive attack were Katie Miller (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville High) and Laura Haring (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai ), each recording three goals in the victory. Junior Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin ) also had a stellar night for the Cards, tallying two goals, four assists, and four groundballs. Katie Buonpastore (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and Mary Swarthout (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) each chipped in two goals and one assist apiece. Swarthout also scooped up 9 groundballs. Lindsay Bitonti (North Potomac, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) was a tough defensive force with three caused turnovers, while goaltender Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic ) garnered ten saves.
St. Mary's opened up the scoring with a Nora Fallon-Oben goal just 40 seconds into the game. CUA's Robinson responded by converting off of a pass from Kelly Ryan (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur), immediately followed by Haring's goal at the 20 minute mark. The lead shifted between both teams for the next twenty minutes, but a Buonpastore goal gave the Cards a 7-6 advantage by the end of the half.
CUA kept the offensive fire going, scoring three goals to open up the second half. St. Mary's answered with two goals of their own, but the Cards offensive prowess proved too much for the Sea Hawks to handle. Swarthout ended the night by blasting a shot past St. Mary's goalie Colleen Simpson, giving CUA the 16-11 advantage as the game came to an end.
The squad looks to continue their winning ways as they travel to Stevenson on Saturday, March 21st. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
