Cardinals Scorch Red Devils
CARLISLE, Pa.- The #13 Catholic University women's lacrosse team earned their sixth consecutive win Tuesday afternoon, overcoming #20 Dickinson 19-16. The Cards now stand at 7-2 on the year, while the Red Devils slip to 6-2.
CUA freshman Mary Swarthout (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) had another stellar night for the Cards, pouring in six goals on 6-6 shooting. Teammate Kate Narzikul (Media, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) added three goals, one draw control, and one caused turnover in the win. Laura Haring (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai), Caroline Taltavull (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg), Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin), Katie Buonpastore (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) all chipped in two goals apiece. Robinson also added an oustanding four assists, three caused turnovers, and three groundballs. Goaltender Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic ) was again the heart of the Cardinal defense, stopping a total of 8 shots on goal.
The Cardinals opened up the scoring as Robinson connected with Katie Miller (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville High) at the 28 minute mark. The Red Devils then went on a 6-1 run to grab a 6-2 lead with 14 minutes in the half. CUA then scored on four consecutive occasions before trading goals to bring both teams to a 7-7 deadlock at the half.
CUA struck first in the second half, and then went on a 5-1 run to take a 12-8 edge with 24 minutes to play. Dickinson fought back and cut the lead to one at the 11 minute mark. The Cards regained their composure and responded with yet another 5-1 run, settling the score at 19-14 with two minutes remaining. The Red Devils added two more goals before time ran out, but the damage had already been done, and CUA ran away with the 19-16 victory.
The squad will return to their home field on Saturday, March 28th for their first conference match-up against Moravian. Game time is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
