Cardinals Down Mary Washington
WASHINGTON- The #11 CUA women's lacrosse team earned their eight consecutive win this season, storming to a 21-9 victory over Mary Washington Wednesday evening. The Cards improve to 9-2 on the year, while Mary Washington drops to 8-5.
CUA had a number of impressive performances in the non-conference contest. Katie Buonpastore set a new single-game assist record, dishing out 11 to go with two goals and five groundballs. Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) and Kate Miller (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville High) formed an unstoppable duo, recording five goals apiece. Robinson also scooped up four groundballs and earned five draw controls. Mary Swarthout (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) tallied six caused turnovers and a team-high seven draw controls, while Lindsay Bitonti led the team with 9 groundballs. Goaltender Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) stopped six shots and collected five groundballs in the net.
Mary Washington jumped out to an early 3-2 lead in the opening minutes of the game, but the Cardinals quickly stormed back by finishing the first period outscoring their opponent 11-2. CUA finished the half with a comfortable 13-5 lead.
The second stanza resembled the first, as Catholic University continued their offensive rampage. The Cards scored the first two goals of the period, but the Eagles responded by scoring three consecutive goals of their own. CUA fired back by outscoring their opponent 6-1 for the remainder of the period, and the squad ran away with a convincing 21-9 victory.
CUA will look to continue their winning ways on April 4th, as they head to Susquehanna University for a 12 p.m., Landmark Conference match up.
