Drew Snaps Cardinal's Winning Streak
MADISON, N.J.- The Catholic University of America women's lacrosse team suffered an 11-8 setback to Drew University on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the team drops to 13-3 on the year, 4-1 in the Landmark Conference.
Mary Swarthout (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) led CUA's offensive efforts with four goals, 7 ground balls, five draw controls. The freshman also contributed two caused turnovers. Midfielder Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) added two goals and five draw controls in the contest. Kiki Sackett (Olney, Md./Magruder) and Kate Narzikul (Media, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece. Goaltender Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) contributed 11 saves in the loss.
The Rangers came out running on all four cylinders, rattling off six unanswered goals to open up the first half. Robinson notched the first Cardinal goal at the 10:51 mark, followed by goals from Narzikul and Swarthout. Drew fired off two more goals in response, but Robinson converted off a free position shot to bring the score to 8-4 at the end of the half.
Drew then scored the next three consecutive goals to put the squad ahead 11-4. Swarthout then found the back of the net at the 13 minute mark, sparking a 4-0 Cardinal run to finish the game. CUA was unable to surpass their opponent, as the Rangers ran away with the 11-8 victory.
CUA will now await to hear its post season fate as the #2 seed in the Landmark Conference tournament.
