Cards Roll Past Royals in Landmark Semi-Finals
WASHINGTON- The #11 Catholic University women's lacrosse team proved once again why they are one of the most dominant teams in the NCAA, defeating conference foe Scranton University 18-5 in round one of the Landmark Conference Tournament Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the team advances to the championship game to be held on Saturday, May 2nd at 1 p.m.
Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) had another outstanding performance, contributing six goals, three assists, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Laura Haring (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) was another offensive threat for the Cards, tallying three goals in the win. Katie Buonpastore (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) Mary Swarthout (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), Lindsay Davenport (Delran, N.J./Delran), and Mallory Vogel (Bel-Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) each added two goals apiece. Buonpastore also dished out two assists, while Swarthout scooped up four ground balls. Goaltender Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) added six saves in the win.
The Cards jumped out to an early advantage, outscoring the Royals 6-1 in the first twenty minutes of play. Defensively, the Cardinals held their opponent to just 8 shots in the first stanza, while tallying 33 of their own. Three consecutive goals by Robinson, Taltavull, and Swarthout gave CUA a commanding 14-3 edge going in to the halftime period.
CUA then continued their offensive rampage, as Haring opened up the second period with a pair of back-to-back goals. Scranton was able to find the back of the net at the twenty minute mark, but the Cards responded by scoring three goals in a three minute span to seal the deal.
The squad will now head to Madison, N.J. to face Drew University for the Landmark Conference Championship game on Saturday, May 2nd at 1 p.m.
