Marymount No Match for Cards
WASHINGTON- The CUA women's lacrosse team continued to roll through the competition at Cardinal Stadium Thursday afternoon, defeating the Saints of Marymount University 19-5. With the win, the Cards improve to 12-2 on the year, while Marymount drops 5-7.
CUA controlled the game from the opening minutes, outshooting their opponent 48-15, and scooping up 21 more groundballs. Midfielder Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) led the way for the Cardinals' offensive attack, finding the back of the net on six occasions while dishing out two assists. The junior also recorded 7 caused turnovers and six groundballs. Katie Buonpastore (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) also had a solid performance for the Red and Black with three goals and two groundballs. The duo of Caroline Taltavull (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) and Mary Swarthout (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) chipped in two goals and one assist apiece. Taltavull also added five groundballs and five draw controls. Kelly Ryan (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) tallied six groundballs while teammate Christina Rogers (Monmouth Beach, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) earned six caused turnovers in the win.
The Cardinals quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead off goals from Robinson, Ryan, and Buonpastore. Marymount's Sarah Horne then found the back of the net for the Saints, but CUA responded with three consecutive goals of their own. From there, the Red and Black outscored their opponent 5-3, as the Cards took an 11-4 lead at the half.
Robinson then took control of CUA's offensive efforts, scoring three straight goals for in the first 8 minutes of play. The Cardinals used a balanced offensive attack to rattle off 8 consecutive goals, while the squad's defense held Marymount scoreless until the 51 second mark. By the final buzzer, the Cards had secured a commanding 19-5 victory.
The squad will return to action next Saturday, as they prepare for a conference battle against Scranton University. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
