Women's Lacrosse Clinches Conference Championship
MADISON, N.J.- The CUA women's lacrosse team avenged last month's loss to Drew University by defeating the Rangers 11-10 in a thrilling Landmark Conference Championship game Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 15-3 overall, earning their second conference championship in as many years.
The squad was led by the stellar shooting of midfielder Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./ Catoctin), who recorded three goals, five draw controls, and one ground ball. Caroline Taltavull (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) and Kelly Ryan (Levittown, N.Y./ MacArthur) followed closely behind with two goals apiece, while Taltavull also scooped up four ground balls. Christina Rogers (Monmouth Beach, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) was a tough defensive presence for the Cards, contributing an impressive three caused turnovers and one ground ball. Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic ) had another busy day in the net, stopping a total of nine shots in the victory.
CUA found themselves in a heated battle for the conference title from the opening minutes of the game. Catholic's Taltavull notched the first point of the game, but the Rangers would fire back with back-to-back goals of their own. The trio of Lindsay Davenport (Delran, N.J./Delran), Laura Haring (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai ), and Mary Swarthout (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) recorded three goals to give the Cardinals a 4-2 advantage midway through the half. The Rangers answered by outscoring CUA 5-2 in the final minutes, taking a 7-6 lead to end the first stanza.
The Cards came out firing on all four cylinders in the second period, rattling off three consecutive goals to put them up 9-7. The two teams then traded back and forth goals for the remainder of the heated second half, but Catholic's Robinson iced the game by converting on two seperate occasions to end the game.
The team will now await to hear their post-season fate, with the NCAA Selection Show scheduled for Sunday, May 3rd at 10 p.m.
