Catholic Dominates Susquehanna 17-2
Overwhelming defense and balanced offense proves to be too much for the Crusaders.
Selingsgrove, Pa.- Nine different Cardinals scored in today's Landmark Conference battle against the Crusaders from Susquehanna University. This balanced attack coupled with stifling defense gave CUA a 17-2 victory. The win keeps Catholic undefeated in the Landmark Conference (2-0) and improves their overall record to 10-2. Susquehanna moves to 6-3 on the year and 0-1 in the Landmark.
Before two minutes had elapsed on the clock, freshman Katie Miller (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville High) scored the first of her two goals off a Susquehanna turnover. Within thirty seconds, two more Cardinals had found the back of the net and the score was quickly 3-0. The dominance of the Cardinals continued and it wasn't until the score was 10-0 that Susquehanna cracked the CUA defense with 10:57 left in the first half. Four more Cardinal goals before the buzzer sounded made the halftime score 14-1.
Fans witnessed a much more even game in the second half. Many Cardinals saw the field in the half and kept up the strong defense to limit the Crusaders to just one goal. The Cardinals scored three for a final score of 17-2.
The Cardinals were led by sophomore Kate Buonpastore (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and junior Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) who each scored three goals and had two assists. Freshman Mary Swarthout (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), also netted three goals on the day. Junior Laura Harring (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) also added two assists.
Goalie Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) continued her excellent play in the net to get the win for the Cardinals. The junior had four saves and only allowed one goal. Overall, the entire Cardinal defense was outstanding as the Crusaders had 32 turnovers and only 10 shots. Sophomore Caroline Taltavull (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) led the defense with two caused turnovers and five ground balls.
The next game for the Cardinals will be an away game against conference foe Goucher on Tuesday, April 7th at 4:00. The next home game will be on Thursday, April 9th at 4:00 against Marymount.
