CUA Suffers Setback to Stevenson
WASHINGTON- Despite a late second half push, the #7 CUA women's lacrosse team was defeated by Stevenson University Saturday afternoon, 18-13. With the loss, the Cards drop to 1-3 on the year, while the Mustangs improve to 7-2.
The Mustangs immediately opened up the scoring with a quick goal just seconds into the first half. CUA's Meghan Brady responded by recording back-to-back goals to give the Cards a 2-1 advantage. SU's Lauren Zegowitz adding two goals of her own to put the Mustangs up 3-2. Stevenson recorded seven additional goals to end the period, but sharp shooting by Mallory Vogel, Brady, Laura Haring, Mary Swarthout, and Katie Buonpastore all helped keep the squad in the game. CUA trailed by just two at the half.
Kelly Ryan started things off for the Cards, converting off a pass from Swarthout at the 26 minute mark. Stevenson scored moments later, but Swarthout and Brady kept Catholic alive with two consecutive goals to tie the game at 11-11. Stevenson managed to outscore the home team 7-2 in the final minutes of play, however, sealing the 18-13 victory.
Brady had an outstanding afternoon, contributing five goals, two groundballs, and two caused turnovers. Swarthout added two goals, three assists, two groundballs, and two turnovers. Haring also added two goals in the Cardinal loss. Goalies Melissa Brashear and Gabby Sena combined for six saves in the net.
CUA will look to improve their record on Tuesday, as they host Dickinson at 2:30 p.m.
