Dickinson Edges Women's Lax
WASHINGTON- After a 7-3 second half run by the visiting Red Devils, the Catholic University women’s lacrosse team dropped a 12-11 heartbreaker to Dickinson College Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, CUA drops to 1-4 on the year, while DC improves to 4-1.
Laura Haring started things off for the Cards early on, sparking a 7-2 run to open up the game. The well-balanced offensive attack was the key to CUA’s success, as they distributed the ball beautifully and outshot their opponent 18-10. The Red Devils scored three unanswered goals in the final 11 minutes to end the first period, but the Cards held on to a 7-5 halftime lead.
Catholic kept things going in the second half, as Caroline Tultavull connected with Kelly Ryan to open up period two. Dickinson responded with back-to-back goals to knot the score at 8-7, but Mallory Vogel and Katie Miller extended the Cardinal lead to 10-8 with two goals of their own. A 4-1 Red Devil run in the final 14 minutes, including the game-winning goal with 51 seconds remaining, sealed the 12-11 victory for the visiting team.
Leading the charge for the Cards were senior Laura Haring (two goals, two assists, three groundballs, and one caused turnover) and Kelly Ryan (two goals, one assist, two groundballs, one draw control, and one caused turnover). Katie Miller also contributed two goals, one groundball, and one draw control. Mary Swarthout, Lindsay Davenport, Kate Narzikul, Tultavull and Vogel rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece. Davenport and Katie Buonpastore dished out a team-high of two assists.
Meg Paul, Swarthout, and Buonpastore were also tenacious forces on the defensive end, combining for 9 of the teams’ 20 caused turnovers. Goaltender Melissa Brashear totaled 8 saves in the net.
CUA will return to action on Thursday, March 25, as they travel to McDaniel College for a 4 p.m., contest.
